An essential guide to learning Modern Javanese, one of Indonesia's most widely spoken regional languages.

Whether you are beginning your journey into the Javanese language, reconnecting with your cultural heritage, or deepening your understanding of Javanese linguistics, Javanese Grammar for Students offers a structured and accessible introduction to Modern Javanese.

Written by Professor Stuart Robson, a distinguished scholar of Javanese language and literature, this book introduces readers to the foundations of Javanese grammar through carefully arranged lessons, practical explanations, and numerous examples.

Now in its third revised edition, the book takes students progressively from simpler grammatical concepts to more complex structures, helping readers develop their understanding of the language.

What You'll Find Inside

  • Progressive grammar lessons: Carefully organised units introduce grammatical concepts in a logical sequence, allowing students to build their knowledge gradually.

  • Practical examples: Numerous examples illustrate how Javanese grammatical structures function in everyday language.

  • "How Do You Say It in Javanese?": A dedicated reference section arranged under 120 English headwords, helping English-speaking learners find natural Javanese equivalents for common expressions and idioms.

  • Javanese speech levels: An introduction to the different language levels of Javanese and their importance in social interaction, politeness, and cultural communication.

  • Revised and expanded content: The third edition includes fresh examples and updated material to support students in their learning.
